Does your school engage with the community via social media? Perhaps a Facebook page or Twitter account?
The first steps are to Launch, Friend and Engage.
- Launch or re-launch your school’s Facebook/Twitter page.
- Put links from your school’s website to your Facebook/Twitter accounts
- Send an email to alumni, parents, students and prospective families that you have account and ask them to Like or Follow your school
- Announce at school meetings/advertise that you want your staff and students to Like/Follow
But what do you do once you have some followers? You must engage your community, not just bombard them with information.
Share School News
- What’s happening around your school? Academic, social, community, spiritual, charity etc.
- Upcoming events (RSVP) can be shared
- Make school announcements
- Share educational articles. It’s not really about you – be helpful!
- Publish everything on the school website and link to it on Facebook/Twitter
- Milestones can be added on Facebook. Highlight key moments and dates in the journey of your school.
Showcase School Culture
- Share photos – Students exhibiting values the school encourages, celebrations of student work, excursions, assemblies, individual excellence
- Share videos (YouTube Channel) – A variety of learning (different subjects/age groups), school events, high caliber teaching and student engagement, students/teachers/community discussing what makes the school special, sporting events, plays/concerts
Use Privacy Controls
- Who has access and control of your Facebook page? Check the admin rights of those in control of the school Facebook page.
- Profanity blocklist – you can change the settings so that profanity is automatically blocked.
- Enable email notifications – rather than keep checking back, have updates emailed to you.
- Don’t let your school account become hacked. Create a strong password for your Facebook account.
- Get started with Page Insights. The knowledge of who clicks on what can be invaluable.
- Post vibrant pictures that are hosted on and linked to your website
- High quality cover photo (Correctly sized 851px X 315px)
- Post regularly and at the same time each day
- Follow or ‘like’ hundreds of private schools
- Use more than just Facebook. Twitter. Consider Pinterest, YouTube etc.
- Drive traffic to your school website by always posting it on your school blog or site first. Then link to it via social media
- Post material that infringes Intellectual Property rights: http://www.smartcopying.edu.au/
- Post personal info/photos without consent [state school consent form]
- Upload pictures to the social media platform. Upload them to your school website.
- Removing negative comments or feedback. Deal with feedback rather than eliminate it. Sure, there are some posts that need to be curated, but most deserve a friendly reply such as: “We will get back to you on this issue as soon as possible. Please Direct Message us a number that we can call you on in regards to this topic”.
- Grammar, spelling, punctuation errors are a no no at the best of times. Coming from an educational institution it is imperative that your posts are triple checked for errors.
